Look After Your Feet - Ashley James Health & Performance

by Ashley on July 17, 2012

The foot is comprised of 26 individual bones which comprises around 25% of the total amount of bones in your body when you count both feet together.

The pressure going through your feet can exceed 1.5 times your body weight especially when you exercise; running puts 3-4 times your body weight through your foot.

According to the American Podiatric Medical Association, walking is the best exercise for your feet. An average person walks between 8000 and 10,000 steps per day which equates to around 115,000 miles in a lifetime, which is nearly half way to the moon!

There are more sweat glands in your foot per square inch than anywhere else in your body and there are also many nerves endings too. This is why the foot is a common place for fungal infections and is often affected in diabetics (blood supply to the nerve endings is reduced).

Around 75% of the population will experience foot pain at some point in their lives, with women being 4 times more likely than men due to wearing high heels.

There are many possible injuries or problems that can occur in the foot such as; bunions, arthritis, plantar fasciitis and many other. Therefore it is definitely important to look after your feet.

For good foot health we should try to be barefoot as often as possible. Start by walking around the house barefoot? so your bones can get maximum movement through them. If you find that comfortable you can look into barefoot shoes such as the Vibram Five-Fingers. They look pretty ridiculous but there are enough people walking around with them these days that they have become almost main-stream.

It is not advisable however to start running barefoot (even though we are designed to do this) because our feet have become so used to wearing footwear that such a change would probably cause more harm than good. Start off walking barefoot for several months before you even think about running.

If you are already a runner, look into buying a pair of running shoes whose heel is not as thick as a standard running shoe as an initial progression towards bare-foot running.

Stretch your feet out regularly to maintain good function and flexibility in all the joints. The simplest of the stretches are shown below;
