Inspiration for 'No Easy Day' author is reissued

NEW YORK (AP) ? A publishing house is reissuing a Navy SEAL novel set in Vietnam that helped inspire author Mark Owen of the best-selling "No Easy Day."

St. Martin's Press announced Friday that a new edition of "Men in Green Faces," by former SEAL Gene Wentz and B. Abell Jurus, will come out in November. The book, based on Wentz's experiences in Vietnam, was first released in 1992.

"No Easy Day" is a firsthand account of the SEAL mission in Pakistan that killed Osama bin Laden last year. Owen is a pseudonym for former SEAL Mark Bissonnette. He praises "Men in Green Faces" as a page-turner that made him wonder if he "could measure up."

Sony ties up with Olympus, takes 11 percent stake

TOKYO (AP) ? Sony is expanding its sprawling electronics to movies business empire with a new venture ? looking inside the human body.

The company on Friday said it will spend 50 billion yen ($640 million) for an 11 percent stake in Olympus Corp., an embattled maker of endoscopes, which are the long thin camera-equipped instruments that allow medical professionals to peer inside the body.

The deal was widely expected as Sony president Kazuo Hirai had expressed interest in moving into the medical equipment business.

Olympus Corp. is the world's biggest maker of endoscopes and is also known for its cameras. It has been on shaky ground after its British chief executive Michael Woodford turned whistleblower and helped unearth a scandal involving a systematic cover-up of massive losses.

Sony Corp. has its own problems and is hoping new businesses will be part of its turnaround. Sony has reported losses for four straight years as it fell behind in portable music players, flat-panel TVs and smartphones. Sony's red ink for the latest fiscal year through March was the worst in its 66-year history.

The two companies said they will set up a new medical equipment company together later this year, 51 percent owned by Sony and the rest by Olympus.

The alliance between Sony and Olympus will focus on the camera business as well, and both sides can benefit from sharing their technology, and working together to become more competitive, they said. In such alliances, companies can share in procurement on parts, boosting their bargaining power with suppliers and lowering costs.

"I will do my best to make this meaningful and profitable for both Olympus and Sony," Hirai said in a statement. Sony will become the biggest shareholder in Olympus after acquiring the 11 percent stake.

Olympus President Hiroyuki Sasa said working with Sony will help shore up Olympus' finances, and that its endoscope business would benefit from Sony's image-sensor technology.

Sasa and Hirai plan a joint news conference Monday morning in Tokyo, where they will likely face questions about how two troubled Japanese companies getting together might lead to them competing more successfully on the global stage.

Earlier this week, Sasa was at the Tokyo District Court to enter a guilty plea for Olympus, along with three former executives who faced charges as individuals, in the opening session of a trial into the fraudulent financial reports.

Olympus has said it hid 117.7 billion yen ($1.5 billion) in investment losses dating to the 1990s.

Prosecutors outlined in detail the elaborate schemes concocted over the years, using overseas bank accounts, paper companies and transactions controlled behind-the-scenes, all to keep massive losses off the company books.

Home Inspection - Home Inspection Scope of Work | Improvement ...

A home inspection or appraisal is a constrained, non-invasive assessment of the condition of the house, commonly in relation to the selling of a particular house. This is done normally by a home assessor who possesses the skills and certifications to carry out such inspections. The assessor prepares the details, normally by using home assessment software, and takes the whole details of the house to the purchaser. Then the interested buyer makes use of the facts obtained in deciding whether to continue the pending procurement of the property. The home assessor points out the real condition of the property during the assessment but without the assurance of the forthcoming state, effectiveness or existence of the works or system.

The home inspector tests the roof, structure, basement, water heater, heating system, air conditioning, plumbing, structure, electrical, and several other features of the house looking for inappropriate building practices, those things which oblige wide-spread repairs, things which are common maintenance matters, and at the same time, fire and also safety issues. Though it must be noted also that house assessment is not strictly comprehensive and does not mean that all defects can be revealed.

A general listing of exclusions encompasses but is not partial to: rules or zoning defiance, permit research, boundaries, property surveys or measurements, right of way or easements, proximity to environmental dangers, noise interference, condition of the title, soil conditions, buried piping, fine water system or quality of water, waste disposal system, cisterns, underground water reservoir and also sprinkler systems.

Home Inspection - Home Inspection Scope of Work

A house inspector establishes the situation of the structure, and the appraiser decides on the worth of the property. Home inspectors are occasionally confused with property appraiser.

Professional house inspection is the assessment of the present situation of the house. The inspection is not the appraisal or municipal inspection which validates the compliance of the local building regulations. Home inspectors, therefore, will not fail or pass a house, but relatively describe the physical state and point out what parts and systems need a minor or major replacements or repairs.

In every home, even the new ones, a few building deficiencies will be discovered certainly during inspection. All significant findings can be detailed in written reports in order that the buyer will have the reference and review, and the examiner will do an inclusive oral presentation of conditions to those who are present during the inspection.

The facts enable the home purchaser to make skilled decisions regarding home purchase; whether to finish the transaction, whether to inquire the vendor to do repairs, whether to purchase the home as is. Buyers may also find out how many repairs and renovations are needed once they get the possession, which are the minor and major problems, and what satiation compromise security of all the premises. A detailed inspection allows the house buyer to prevent expensive surprises after securing the escrow. It is a vital element of an organized purchase.

YouTube for Android updated with new UI for Froyo and Gingerbread, fresh Watch experience

Android Central

Thanks to a YouTube app update that just rolled out today, anyone with a Froyo or Gingerbread device can now enjoy refreshed UI and preloading mechanism. Google has also made a few tweaks to the Watch screen, though there's nothing particularly dramatic. This update added the ability to move videos to your personal YouTube TV queue - a great touch for those of us that want to watch videos in their full glory on the big screen. Finally, a few more channels have been added to the Channel Store. The skippable YouTube ads we've been waiting for are also live in this update.

Combined with an updated in March which enabled HD video playback on Gingerbread and Froyo devices, it's great to see Google's not leaving the older phones behind. Additional YouTube TV support is a nice touch, and something of a necessity for those of us with Google TV set-top boxes.

Are you guys finding anything particularly nice about this update? Maybe a small tweak that didn't make it to the changelog?

Madonna calls Obama a 'Black Muslim'

By Rolling Stone.com

Maybe it was a slip of the tongue or maybe it was misguided sarcasm, but?Madonna?called President Obama a "black Muslim" Monday night at a tour stop in Washington D.C. in what otherwise resembled a message of support.

After praising Abraham Lincoln and Martin Luther King Jr., Madonna turned her attention to Obama, saying, "It is so amazing and incredible to think that we have an African-American in the White House!" But the pop star didn't stop there. "So y'all better vote for (expletive) Obama, OK? For better or for worse, all right, we have a black Muslim in the White House, OK?" she said. "It means there is hope in this country. And Obama is fighting for gay rights, OK? So support the man, (dammit)!"

You can watch her speech below. Warning -- she does use some adult language.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Jerry Wiseman notices it's harder to turn and check his car's blind spots at age 69 than it was at 50. So the Illinois man and his wife took a refresher driving course, hunting tips to stay safe behind the wheel for many more years ? a good idea considering their state has arguably the nation's toughest older-driver laws.

More older drivers are on the road than ever before, and an Associated Press review found they face a hodgepodge of state licensing rules that reflect scientific uncertainty and public angst over a growing question: How can we tell if it's time to give up the keys?

Thirty states plus the District of Columbia have some sort of older-age requirement for driver's licenses, ranging from more vision testing to making seniors renew their licenses more frequently than younger people. At what age? That's literally all over the map. Maryland starts eye exams at 40. Shorter license renewals kick in anywhere from age 59 in Georgia to 85 in Texas.

The issue attracted new attention when a 100-year-old driver backed over a group of schoolchildren in Los Angeles late last month. That's a rarity, but with an imminent surge in senior drivers, the federal government is proposing that all states take steps to address what the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration calls "the real and growing problem of older driver safety."

Here's the conundrum: "Birthdays don't kill. Health conditions do," said Joseph Coughlin, head of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's AgeLab, which develops technologies to help older people stay active.

Healthy older drivers aren't necessarily less safe than younger ones, Coughlin points out. But many older people have health issues that can impair driving, from arthritis to dementia, from slower reflexes to the use of multiple medications. There's no easy screening tool that licensing authorities can use to spot people with subtle health risks. So some states use birthdays as a proxy for more scrutiny instead.

Senior driving is a more complicated issue than headline-grabbing tragedies might suggest. Older drivers don't crash as often as younger ones. But they also drive less. About 60 percent of seniors voluntarily cut back, avoiding nighttime driving or interstates or bad weather, said David Eby of the University of Michigan's Center for Advancing Safe Transportation throughout the Lifespan.

Measure by miles driven, however, and the crash rate of older drivers begins to climb in the 70s, with a sharper jump at age 80, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. Only teens and 20-somethings do worse.

That rising risk reflects the challenge for families as they try to help older loved ones stay safe but still get around for as long as possible, which itself is important for health.

The good news: Fatal crashes involving seniors have dropped over the past decade, perhaps because cars and roads are safer or they're staying a bit healthier, said the Insurance Institute's Anne McCartt. Yet the oldest drivers, those 85 and up, still have the highest rate of deadly crashes per mile, even more than teens. And more often than not, they're the victims, largely because they're too frail to survive their injuries.

And seniors are about to transform the nation's roadways. Today, nearly 34 million drivers are 65 or older. By 2030, federal estimates show there will be about 57 million ? making up about a quarter of all licensed drivers. The baby boomers in particular are expected to hang onto their licenses longer, and drive more miles, than previous generations.

Specialists say more seniors need to be planning ahead like Jerry Wiseman and his wife Sandy.

"Absolutely we want to be as good drivers as we can possibly be for as long as we can," said Wiseman, of Schaumburg, Ill.

At an AARP course, Wiseman learned exercises to improve his flexibility for checking those blind spots. He takes extra care with left-hand turns, which become riskier as the ability to judge speed and distance wanes with age. He knows to watch for other changes.

"We'll be ready when it's time for one of us to stop," he said.

___

Where you live determines what extra requirements, if any, older adults must meet to keep their driver's license.

Among the most strict rules: Illinois requires a road test to check driving skills with every license renewal starting at age 75 ? and starting at age 81, those renewals are required every two years instead of every four. At 87, Illinois drivers must renew annually.

In Washington, D.C., starting at age 70, drivers must bring a doctor's certification that they're still OK to drive every time they renew their license.

New Mexico requires annual renewals at 75.

Geographic variability makes little sense, said Jake Nelson, AAA's director of traffic safety advocacy and research. "Either I'm safe to drive or I'm not. Where I live shouldn't matter," he said.

Yet when Iowa drivers turn 70, they must renew their license every two years instead of every five. Neighboring Missouri lets the 70-year-olds renew every three years instead of every six.

Some states introduce age requirements after high-profile accidents. Massachusetts now requires drivers to start renewing licenses in person at age 75, with proof of an eye exam. The change came after an 88-year-old driver struck and killed a 4-year-old crossing a suburban Boston street in 2009.

This summer, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration proposed a national guideline for older driver safety that, if finalized, would push states to become more consistent. Among the recommendations: Every state needs a program to improve older driver safety; doctors should be protected from lawsuits if they report a possibly unsafe driver; and driver's licenses should be renewed in person after a certain age, tailored to each state's crash data.

Still, many states say their main focus should be on inexperienced teen drivers and problems such as texting behind the wheel.

"Teens are risk takers. Our older drivers are risk avoiders," said Alabama state Rep. Jim McClendon. Alabama drivers renew licenses every four years, with no older age requirements.

New Hampshire last year stopped requiring road tests when 75-year-olds renewed their licenses. The law was repealed after an 86-year-old legislator called it discriminatory.

It's not the only state worrying about age discrimination.

"You don't want to go around and say, 'This person is 85. We've got to take them off the road.' That wouldn't be fair," said Assemblyman David Gantt of New York, where licenses last for eight years.

On the other side is the family of a Baltimore college student who died last year after being run over by an 83-year-old driver who turned into his bike lane. Maryland next month begins issuing licenses that last longer ? eight years instead of five ? despite an emotional appeal from the mother of Nathan Krasnopoler that that's too long for the oldest drivers.

"You should be looking at your drivers to be sure they're able to safely drive. There's plenty of research that as we age, things do change and we may not be aware of those changes," said Susan Cohen, who now is urging Maryland officials to study adding some form of competency screening, in addition to the required eye exams, to license renewals.

"Do we have to lose a 20-year-old with an incredible future ahead of him in order to determine that this particular driver shouldn't be driving?" she asked.

_____

Traffic challenges change for older drivers, who are less likely than younger ones to be in crashes involving alcohol or speeding. Instead, they have more trouble with intersections, making left turns, and changing lanes or merging, because of gradual declines in vision, reaction times and other abilities, according to the National Institutes of Health.

Scientists are hunting screening tests to check for such things as early warning signs of cognitive problems that might signal who's more at risk. But such screenings are a long way from the local license office. In a closely watched pilot project, California tried a three-step screening process to detect drivers who might need a road test before getting their licenses renewed ? but it didn't reduce crashes, sending researchers back to the drawing board.

Today, AAA's Nelson said in-person renewals are "the single most effective thing states can do to improve safety."

That's because workers in the driver's license office can be trained to look for signs of confusion or trouble walking as people come in ? two big clues that they may have trouble behind the wheel ? and refer those drivers for a road test or a medical exam to see if there's really a problem.

Virginia, for example, lets even the oldest drivers hold a license for eight years, but starting at 80 they must renew in person and pass an eye test. California has five-year renewals, and starting at 70 they must be in-person with both a written test and eye check.

Those eye tests can make a difference. In senior-filled Florida, 80-year-olds renew their licenses every six years instead of every eight, with a vision check each time. A study found highway deaths among Florida's older drivers dropped 17 percent after the vision test was mandated in 2003.

How long between renewals is best? There's no scientific consensus, but Nelson recommends every four to six years.

Another big key: Programs that make it easy for doctors, police and family members to alert licensing officials to possibly unsafe drivers of any age, so the experts can investigate. But in states that don't allow confidential reporting, families in particular hesitate in fear of backlash if upset relatives learn who turned them in.

Utah adopted confidential reporting in 2008 "to encourage more people to report problematic drivers without the risk of retaliation of repercussion," said Chris Caras of Utah's Department of Public Safety.

Nor should the question be only whether someone should drive or not: Iowa is leading a growing number of states that customize license restrictions to allow people to stay on the road under certain conditions. People with early-stage Alzheimer's or Parkinson's disease, for instance, may qualify for a one-year license; people with other health conditions may be allowed to drive only during the day or within a few miles of home.

In California, older drivers who fail a regular road test sometimes get a re-test on familiar neighborhood roads to qualify for a restricted license. State traffic researchers expect demand for that option to grow, and are preparing to study if that tailored testing really assures safety.

Meanwhile, how can people tell how they do on the road?

?The University of Michigan developed an online self-test to help drivers detect safety changes: http://um-saferdriving.org/.

?AAA and AARP offer websites with similar tools and links to driving courses: http://seniordriving.aaa.com/ and http://www.aarp.org/home-garden/transportation/driver_safety/

But ultimately, "the only way you can assess any driver at any age is to sit in the seat next to them and watch them drive," said Coughlin.

T-Mobile-bound Samsung Galaxy Note 2 gets additional confirmation by tipsters

    Android Central

We had seen some pretty solid hints that the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 would be arriving on T-Mobile as the SGH-T889, but some additional sources have confirmed that it's still on the way, despite other reports that the phablet's plans for TMo had been canceled. In fact, some of the software currently in testing for the T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Note 2 has leaked. The firmware is labeled T889UVALIC,  and is fresh out of the oven, having been compiled on September 15.

According to the sources, the specs are pretty much identical to the European version, which include:

    • Network: 3G: HSPA+ 21Mbps (HSDPA 21Mbps / HSUPA 5.76Mbps)
    • Processor: 1.6 GHz quad-core processor
    • Display: 5.5” HD Super AMOLED (1,280 x 720)
    • OS: Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean)
    • Camera: Main (Rear): 8 Megapixel Auto Focus Camera with LED Flash, BSI; Sub(Front): 1.9 Megapixel VT Camera, BSI; Best Photo, Best Faces, Low light shot

T-Mobile customers itching to pick up the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 can live vicariously through our hands-on video from IFA over here

There hasn't been a lot of talk about dates, but with the back-to-school season quickly winding down, it's hard to imagine T-Mobile not releasing the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 before the end of the month. Any of you T-Mobile customers ready to go (really) big?

home improvement | managing roof pests

Keeping pests away from your roof is one of the best ways to ensure the longevity of your roofing materials. Some pests, like wasps, pose threats to residents while others, like raccoons, are likely to cause damage to your property and the deterioration of your roof.

Insects ? the winged variety, such as wasps, bees and hornets, are typically looking for a dry place to build their nests along roof lines or inside the roof. Once their numbers grow, they can swarm and attack, making them particularly undesirable. Other insects, such as termites or ants, may be looking for their next meal, causing damage to the home?s structure.

Birds ? bird droppings are acidic and corrosive and can cause deterioration of shingles and shakes. When birds are hunting around the rooftop for insects, their beaks can damage the surface and create gaps and holes. As well, if they nest on your roof they will leave behind dirt, leaves and building materials that can lead to mildew, rot and more extensive damage.

Rodents ? teeth and claws are the culprits here, particularly when it comes to destruction of shakes or shingles. The damage done by squirrels, raccoons, possums and others as they try to gain access into your attic for a warm, dry place to nest can lead to large gaps or holes in the roofing material, making it even more inviting to insects and allowing water seepage in your home.

Over the long term, it is possible for these unwanted visitors to cause serious damage to your roof. But what can you do to control or manage roof pests?
? Prune back trees away from the roof line so that they do not give rodents easy access.
? Keep bird feeders well away from your roof to cut down the number of birds and rodents that are attracted to the area.
? Install a hawk or owl silhouette on your roof. As simple as this sounds, if animals think there is a predator nearby, they are unlikely to frequent the area or nest there.
? Visually inspect your roof on a regular basis and remove debris before it attracts other pests or begins to rot. Also, by keeping an eye on your roof, you will spot insect nests when they are small and easy to remove/spray rather than finding one when they have reached massive proportions.
? Talk to your local animal control office. They will likely have tips that work particularly well for pests in your area.
? If you have done your best or if the problem is advanced, call in the pros. You may need to call in an exterminator to get rid of the problem and then, if there has been any damage to the structure, talk to a roofing contractor about repairs.

The best line of defense when trying to manage roof pests is to take preventative action before a problem arises and to keep your roof free of debris and in good condition.

Gas prices hit $8 in NJ, Pa. in Lukoil protest

SOUTH PLAINFIELD, N.J. (AP) ? More than 50 Lukoil gas stations in New Jersey and Pennsylvania jacked up prices to more than $8 a gallon Wednesday to protest what they say are unfair pricing practices by Lukoil North America that leave them at a competitive disadvantage.

Dozens of Lukoil franchise owners also gathered to protest at a station in this central New Jersey town where the posted prices were an eye-popping $8.99 a gallon.

The owners and the New Jersey Gasoline, Convenience, Automotive Association said the one-day protest was aimed at raising consumer awareness about the challenges facing Lukoil dealers and getting the company to respond to dealer grievances.

Station owners said Lukoil charges them more for gasoline than other companies charge their franchisees, forcing them to pass that increase onto consumers. It is not uncommon, they said, to see a competitor selling gas to the public for considerably less than what they're paying Lukoil per gallon.

"My price on invoices is what my competitors are selling on this street," said Khalid Zackria, owner of the South Plainfield station where the dealers assembled. "That's why it's hard for me to survive."

Sal Risalvato, executive director of the gas station association, said Lukoil charges 7 cents more per gallon than other companies and that owners might pay more on top of that depending on where their station is located.

Lukoil North America issued a statement defending its pricing practices, which it said comply with state law, and accused the gas station association of encouraging "public misstatements and ill-conceived actions." It said it does not comment on its competitors' prices.

Lukoil is Russia's second-largest oil producer. The first Lukoil-branded service stations in the U.S. opened in 2003 and today the company has more than 500 in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic. Many of the franchisees entered into agreements with other companies that were bought by Lukoil.

The gas station association said the high prices were meant to get the attention of customers so they know the price pressures they are facing.

Gas stations taking part in the protest handed out fliers to customers explaining why they are struggling to keep their prices down and put up banners asking customers to contact Lukoil. One car pulled into the Lukoil station around the time of the protest; its driver circled the pumps and left.

Roger Verma, who co-owns four Lukoil stations and three Exxon stations, said he pays 18 to 20 cents more per gallon to buy gas from Lukoil than from Exxon.

"Me, as a consumer myself, won't go to Lukoil," Verma said. "How can I expect my customers to?"

Steve Hamparsumian, who owns a Lukoil in Bloomingdale, said his gas station was acquired by Lukoil about six years ago. Since then he said he has lost 50 percent of his business. He said his rent has tripled in that time.

"We have to pay considerably higher prices for anyone else," Hamparsumian said. "Not only are we selling less, our customers have to pay higher prices."

Risalvato said Lukoil and other companies engage in zone pricing, or varying prices based on the competition in local marketplaces. He said Lukoil is an "egregious offender" when it comes to zone pricing, further adding to the higher price it charges owners for gas.

Lukoil, in its statement, defended zone pricing, saying it's a "commercially reasonable practice" used by gasoline marketers for many years and fully compliant with state law.

"We deeply regret that the NJGCA, a trade lobbyist, has apparently encouraged public misstatements and ill-conceived actions which harm consumers, rather than engage in constructive dialogue," the company said.

Tom Kloza, chief analyst at the Oil Price Information Service, which has an office in central New Jersey, said Lukoil and its dealers have had a tenuous relationship over the past few years.

"There has been a history of discontent," he said.

US Ambassador murdered as extremists on all sides win, again

The murder of the US Ambassador to Libya yesterday and a raucous protest in Cairo, all over a movie deemed offensive, recall the widespread violence during the Danish cartoon controversy.

The murder of US Ambassador to Libya Chris Stevens yesterday as an unopposed crowd ransacked and torched the consulate in Benghazi, along with a raucous protest at the US embassy in Cairo, are events that are going to reverberate for months to come. That the violence came on the anniversary of the 2001 Al Qaeda attacks on New York and Washington was not a coincidence.

Mr. Stevens was killed along with three other Americans in Libya's second-largest city, in protests that used as their pretext a hitherto unknown amateur film designed to insult the prophet Muhammad. Stevens was the first US ambassador murdered in the line of duty since Ambassador Adolph Dubs was assassinated in Kabul, Afghanistan, in 1979. Early unconfirmed reports from Benghazi indicated the other dead Americans were Marines assigned to diplomatic security.

The ginned-up controversy over the film, which was propelled to violence by a rabble-rousing Egyptian television channel that presented the film as the work of the US government, recalls the protests over cartoons depicting Muhammad published in Denmark's Jyllands-Posten newspaper in 2005.

Then, there were violent protests across the Middle East over the exercise of free speech in a Western nation. In some ways, it was the beginning of an era of manufactured outrage, with a group of fringe hate-mongers in the West developing a symbiotic relationship with radical clerics across the East. The Westerners deliberately cause offense by describing Islam as a fundamentally violent religion, and all too often mobs in Muslim-majority states oblige by engaging in violence.

Terry Jones, a fringe evangelical Florida preacher, has been one of the instigators on the US end. In the run-up to the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks, he basked in the publicity of a planned Quran-burning and the threats and violence that ensued. Mr. Jones is involved in the latest manufactured controversy as well, since in the past week he's drawn attention to the deliberately insulting film, financed by a self-described Jewish-Israeli real estate developer Sam Bacile living in California.

Jones and Mr. Bacile cannot be blamed for the violence and death of the ambassador. That blame goes to the perpetrators. Who whipped them up? Ground zero for bringing attention to the movie in Egypt appears to be Al-Nas TV, a religious channel owned by Saudi Arabian businessman Mansour bin Kadsa. A TV show presented by anti-Christian, anti-Semitic host Khaled Abdullah before the violence showed what he said were clips from the film, which he insisted was being produced by the United States and Coptic (Egyptian) Christians.

The clip, dubbed from the US film into Arabic, was certainly inflammatory. It shows Muhammad as a grinning fool, talking to a donkey and dubbing it "the first Muslim animal." Max Fisher found a 14-minute video of the movie in English that is even worse, one badly acted anti-Islamic caricature after another, with all Muslims portrayed as cartoonishly violent and depraved child rapists, and a running "joke" that constantly calls Muhammad "the bastard of the unknown father." The frankly disgusting clip is included below.

Body Double: Understanding the Astrophysics of a Newly-Discovered Multi-Planet Binary Star System

A look at Kepler 47 and the mathematical models that describe it

DOUBLE FEATURE: An artist's depiction of the Kepler 47 system. Image: NASA/JPL-Caltech/T. Pyle

Last month astronomers announced the first discovery of multiple planets orbiting a pair of stars. Binary star systems, which comprise two stars orbiting around a common point, are very common?about half of sun-size stars are thought to be members of binary star systems. But it was only in 2011 that astronomers reported the first confirmed instance of a binary system with even a single planet. The newly discovered system, named Kepler 47, consists of a star about the size of the sun and a smaller companion, orbited by two planets.

The reason it has taken so long to find exoplanets around binary stars isn't because they are rare, but because it is hard for us to see them from an earthly vantage point. The data for the Kepler 47 discovery come from the Kepler space telescope, which orbits the sun, not Earth, so our planet doesn't block its view. The spacecraft's mission is to search for planets in the habitable zones around their suns, hopefully giving scientists a better idea of how many systems have planets that could support life.

Kepler detects exoplanets by measuring the tiny changes in a star's brightness caused by the passage of a body in front of it, ? la the?transit of Venus last witnessed in June. Thus, Kepler can only find planets whose orbits line up with its line of sight. Otherwise the planet will not alter the star's light from the telescope's point of view. Scientists thereby are limited in how many of these systems they can find; distant stars don't arrange themselves to provide a better view. Daniel Fabrycky, an astrophysicist at University of California, Santa Cruz, and one of the authors of the?paper announcing the discovery, says, "the punch line is that there's nothing special about it; planets can form around binary stars, too."

Any description of celestial motion starts with classical physics?specifically, Newton's law of gravitation. This law describes the force exerted on one body by another. It says that the force is proportional to the masses of the bodies and inversely proportional to the square of the distance between them. Because force equals mass times acceleration, one can use these two different descriptions of force to write a system of differential equations that will describe the motions of any number of bodies. The problem of describing their motion is called the n-body problem, where n represents the number of bodies in a system. It is actually not too hard to derive the equations, once given the masses and velocities of a bunch of bodies. But only the 2-body problem yields an explicit answer. The solutions for other values of n have to be found through numerical methods, which lead to arbitrarily accurate approximations, rather than by finding universal solutions to the equations.

A binary star system with two orbiting planets is a 4-body problem. But, Fabrycky says, in the case of Kepler-47 the two planets are so much smaller than the two suns that their masses can be assumed to be zero. Thus, the 4-body problem becomes a 2-body one for the two stars, because the planets don't tug on them very much. The solution to this 2-body problem is for each star to be in an elliptical orbit around the two bodies' center of mass. These orbits are described as Keplerian because Johannes Kepler?the Renaissance astronomer for whom the spacecraft is named?first noticed that the planets in our solar system have elliptical, not circular, orbits.

http://www.ted.com Alain de Botton examines our ideas of success and failure -- and questions the assumptions underlying these two judgments. Is success always earned? Is failure? He makes an eloquent, witty case to move beyond snobbery to find true pleasure in our work. TEDTalks is a daily video podcast of the best talks and performances from the TED Conference, where the world's leading thinkers and doers give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes. Featured speakers have included Al Gore on climate change, Philippe Starck on design, Jill Bolte Taylor on observing her own stroke, Nicholas Negroponte on One Laptop per Child, Jane Goodall on chimpanzees, Bill Gates on malaria and mosquitoes, Pattie Maes on the "Sixth Sense" wearable tech, and "Lost" producer JJ Abrams on the allure of mystery. TED stands for Technology, Entertainment, Design, and TEDTalks cover these topics as well as science, business, development and the arts. Closed captions and translated subtitles in a variety of languages are now available on TED.com, at http://www.ted.com/translate.
