It mostly has to do with certification. States require you to take specific classes, pass tests, and what-not to get certified. So it depends on how your school does it.

What my university does is I am a Math major but getting my secondary education certificate for mathematics. So I am a math major with a secondary ed. minor kind of. Basically I?m just tacking on the certification to my math degree so I can teach when I graduate.
