30 Years Ago Today, NFL Football Came to Indianapolis

On August 11, 1984 - exactly 30 years ago today - the Indianapolis Colts took the field in Indy in the Hoosier Dome for the first time ever in a preseason game against the New York Giants. As we begin the 30th season in Indianapolis, we look back at that first game and the years since.

30 years ago today, the Indianapolis Colts took the field in the Hoosier Dome for the first time ever. No, on the outside it wasn't anything special - it was just another preseason game, just like the one that the team had played in (and lost) the week before. But to 60,236 people in the stadium that day, it was everything.

For so long, people had waited for football in Indianapolis. They built a stadium - the Hoosier Dome - but were still waiting for a team. They were in discussion with the Baltimore Colts, one of the league's premier franchises known for their former quarterback Johnny Unitas - but was a move really going to happen? Hoosiers held their breath and waited.

Then, in March of 1984, Colts' owner Robert Irsay was forced to make a decision - and fast. He made a call to Indianapolis mayor Bill Hudnut, accepting the city's offer to move his team there. That night, Mayflower Transit moving trucks went to the Colts' complex, loaded up everything, and headed for Indianapolis, Indiana, each truck taking a different route so that Maryland State Police couldn't stop them (an eminent domain law had just been signed that would have allowed the police to stop the move). Once they got to Indiana, Indiana State Police met them and escorted them the rest of the way to Indianapolis. And just like that, Indiana had a real NFL franchise to call their own.

And on August 11, 1984, 30 years ago this very day, the Colts - the Indianapolis Colts - took the field in Indianapolis' Hoosier Dome for the first time ever. Left end Blaise Winter was the first player introduced in the Hoosier Dome.

That day, the Colts would be playing the New York Giants - the same matchup of the famous 1958 NFL Championship game, also known as "the greatest game ever played." And on this day, even though it was just a simple preseason game, Hoosiers felt like it was something of a championship game. They finally had an NFL team in town.

The Colts opened the game by recovering their own kickoff after the Giants' Chet Winters fumbled it away, and the Colts would go on to take the lead on a 34 yard field goal by Paul Allegre. The Giants scored a touchdown to take a 7-3 lead and then looked poised to extend that lead, but the Colts' defense stiffened in the red zone and stopped the Giants' offense.

The Colts scored their first touchdown in the Hoosier Dome (later renamed the RCA Dome) with 42 seconds left in the first half on a one-yard run by George Wonsley. But the Giants quickly kicked a field goal right before halftime to tie it up at 10.

Later in the game, after a 35 minute halftime and with the score tied at 17 with just over 7 minutes left to play, the Colts took the lead on a two-yard run by Frank Middleton. The two teams them both kicked field goals to put the score at 26-20, and Giants' quarterback Phil Simms (who had replaced Jeff Rutledge at halftime) had one last shot to win the game. The Giants recovered an onside kick and moved to the Colts' 34 yard line. On the final play of the game, Simms' heaved a hail mary to the end zone. It fell incomplete.

Yeah, it was just a preseason game. So what? NFL football was finally in Indianapolis!

Sure, there were rough times, and even some times where it looked like that might not be the case for much longer. Heck, that first year the team went 4-12. They had only 3 playoff appearances in their first 14 years of being in Indianapolis, and in that time a 2-3 postseason record. There was only 5 winning seasons in 14 years, plus 2 years going 8-8.

But looking back on that day in 1984, it has been a pretty great tenure in Indianapolis. They have been to the playoffs 15 out of their 29 years in Indy. They have had 20 seasons with winning records out of 29, a number that any franchise would be proud of.

We've had the chance to see some great players don the blue and white of the hometown team, the Colts. There was Peyton Manning, Marvin Harrison, Edgerrin James, Jeff Saturday, Tarik Glenn, Dwight Freeney, Adam Vinatieri, Marshall Faulk, Eric Dickerson, Chris Hinton, Ray Donaldson, Rohn Stark, Jim Harbaugh, Dallas Clark, and Gary Brackett, among many others. Some of them are still with the team in Robert Mathis and Reggie Wayne.

We've had the chance to see some great moments firsthand in Indianapolis as well. There was the record breaking 49th touchdown pass game, the 2006 AFC Championship game victory over the Patriots, the 2009 AFC Championship game victory over the Jets, Chuck Pagano's return to the sidelines in 2012 against the Texans, and, of course, the Super Bowl that the city of Indianapolis hosted in their new home in the same town, Lucas Oil Stadium (a.k.a. "the House that Peyton Built"). This year, we'll have the chance to see the greatest player in franchise history and one of the best players in NFL history period return to Indianapolis to play (Peyton Manning with the Broncos).

And then undeniably, the shining moment of the Colts tenure in Indianapolis so far came on February 4th, 2007 - not in Indianapolis at all but rather in Miami, Florida. It was there that the Colts, on a rainy night, beat the Chicago Bears and hoisted the Vince Lombardi Trophy. It was there that the hard work of owner Jim Irsay (who was 26 years old and entering his first season as team vice president and general manager when the team played their first game in Indy in 1984), general manager Bill Polian (who was 42 years old and two years away from being hired as the general manager of the Buffalo Bills), head coach Tony Dungy (who was 29 years old and entering his first season as Steelers' defensive coordinator) and quarterback Peyton Manning (who was 8 years old and watching his father Archie play his final NFL season) was realized.

Hoisting that Lombardi Trophy was the crowning moment of the first 30 years (ok, technically 29 seasons so far) in Indianapolis. But their success has gone beyond that. They've compiled a 242-221 (.523) regular season record and have won 11 playoff games (with a .44 winning percentage overall), appearing in 4 conference championship games (winning 2). But perhaps the biggest accomplishment of the Colts' now 30 years in Indianapolis is that they have made it a football town. They took the premier basketball state and turned it into a football state.

And it all started 30 years ago today, as 60,236 fans sat in the Hoosier Dome to see their hometown Colts take the field for the first time in Indianapolis, Indiana. Today, 30 years later, the Colts will once again take the field and fans will once again flock to see their hometown Colts in a preseason game. In between, there have been plenty of memories, and with the looks of this Colts team and the leadership they have in place - owner Jim Irsay, general manager Ryan Grigson, head coach Chuck Pagano, and quarterback Andrew Luck - there will likely be many more in the coming years as well.

After months of failed negotiations and halted operations, North Korea has lifted the ban on South Koreans entering Kaesong Industrial Complex and will hold talks with its southern counterpart over the resumption of activities there. The North?s offer to negotiate comes just in time ? South Korea was on the cusp of shuttering the plant for good.

The potential reopening of the complex, which symbolized the last vestige of inter-Korean activity, may portend the softening of relations between the two rivals after a year of tensions driven by the North?s nuclear ambitions.

North Korea?s offer to restart talks over Kaesong, following six failed attempts between April and July, was readily accepted by the South, reports South Korean Yonhap news agency.?

The Ministry of Unification said that the North's offer to hold working-level talks on Aug. 14, which would be the seventh round following the failure of the previous six, can be viewed in a positive light.

"Seoul views the latest talks proposal as the North responding to repeated calls for dialogue from Seoul," ministry spokesman Kim Hyung-suk said. "We hope the North will engage in dialogue in an earnest manner that can contribute to the constructive growth of the complex."

According to the Associated Press, North Korea?s decision to ban South Korean managers and its subsequent withdrawal of workers from the plant was in response to annual US-South Korea military exercises?and fresh United Nations sanctions against the North following a nuclear test in February.

The North's announcement came only an hour after South Korea stated it would begin insurance payments to many of the companies locked out of Kaesong, a move widely speculated to spell the end of the joint industrial endeavor.

Officials in Seoul say they are optimistic about the upcoming talks. ?We hope that the coming talks should settle issues and produce reasonable ways to normalize the Kaesong industrial complex constructively,? said unification ministry spokesman Kim Hyung-seok.

But there is still doubt as to whether Pyongyang will agree to the South?s demand that it guarantee to not repeat its sudden and costly suspension of work at the complex, writes The Wall Street Journal.

The Kaesong Industrial Complex, opened in 2004, is the only last example of inter-Korean cooperation left from a series of joint projects that were initiated when the two countries enjoyed a period of d?tente, according to The New York Times. In Seoul, it was the period of "the Sunshine Policy."

Eventually, South Korean firms provided the infrastructure and employed 53,000 North Korean workers to produce consumer goods for the market, whose value in 2012 alone was estimated to be around $470 million.

The talks may also mark a turnaround in relations between the two countries, writes the Times. North Korea?s most powerful ally, China, has been pushing Pyongyang towards moderation. Moreover, the North is in dire need of cash, as the sanctions and closure of Kaesong have taken their toll on currency reserves.

Kaesong Industrial Complex generates about $100 million in revenues for North Korea every year, reports Bloomberg.??North Korea probably couldn?t ignore the fact the park is a cash cow and feeds not only the 53,000 workers there but also their family members,? Yoo Ho Yeol, a North Korea professor at Korea University, told Bloomberg.?

Your right I have a Iphone 4s for work and a Note 2 as a personal phone and the note 2 is so such more powerful than the Iphone its almost not comparable. Listen I understand why people love apple products because of build quality and seamlessness but anyone who is not a fanboy of either platform can see android has become the better platform. The iPhones main selling point has always been the end user experience, not just quality. iPhones sell because they deliver practicality dude, iPhone commercials stress the phones everyday usage, and compatability. The iPhone is never marketed as a beast, the millions of mainstream consumers can care less about beastly specs, that's why Samsung changes its marketing approach. Also I'm a techie. I love tech dude, not just apple. I use iOS as my main OS, because it simply works better with my usage patterns than android does. I love both platforms don't label me an apple lover, because I have my issues with them, and some of their business practices too. Your post simply made no sense that's all. Also apple products are only overpriced to those who can't afford them, or dislike them. I can easily afford them, so they're not over priced to me. Demand dictates the market, that's why Bentleys aren't necessarily overpriced, inspire basically doing what a Toyota does for 150,000$ more.

There will be an increase in CPU and GPU specs. RAM will probably be on the order of 2Mb to best run iOS7. Camera of the S will be 12Mp. IDK about OIS. Two-stage Xenon flash for improved low light pics. I doubt there will be stereo speakers. The rest of the iP5S will be about iOS7 working with the 'revolutionary' hardware.

That is about it.

The 5 has 1Mb of RAM. Apple doesn't publish specs; however, one (or more) of the diagnostic sites ran a scan of the 5 and the RAM result was something around 900Kb, which is close enough to 1 Mb, after allowing for O/S overhead.

2 Mb would allow for a smooth operation of iOS7. Apple might cheap it out and hobble it with only 1 Mb and then add in 2 Mb for the 6 after howls of slow/laggy performance. The facts will come out soon enough.

SOUTH MIAMI, Fla. (AP) ? Derek Medina appeared to live much of his life online.

The 6-foot-2, 200-pound South Miami resident posted photos and videos of himself kick boxing, sailing, meeting celebrities and wearing a Miami Heat championship ring. In one Facebook photo, he mugged for the camera, holding a knife and a gun and wearing a green camouflage vest.

There was also what he called his "emotional" side: One of the six e-books the 31-year-old wrote and promoted on his website discussed the importance of communication to a good marriage.

On Thursday, Medina's Web-based persona took a nefarious turn: First he apparently posted a message on his page in which he confessed to killing his 26-year-old wife, Jennifer Alfonso. Moments later, a gruesome photo appeared on the page: a woman wearing black leotards slumped over on the floor with blood on her face and arm, her knees bent and her legs bent back behind her.

Several hours later, Facebook officials had taken down the page and Medina had turned himself in to police. In a police video released late Friday, Medina is shown walking into the police station Thursday at 11:31 a.m. with another man. Medina, wearing jeans and tank top, walks up to the counter, then seconds later sits in a chair to wait.

On Friday, wearing a green jumpsuit, he appeared via video before Miami Judge Maria Elena Verde, who ordered him held without bond on a first-degree murder charge. He is being represented by the public defender's office. A lawyer from the office told him to not discuss the case with anyone.

Neither Medina nor Alfonso had criminal records prior to her death. Their relationship appeared rocky, however.

Public records show they first married in January 2010, divorced in February 2012, then remarried three months later. In March 2012, Medina bought the couple's condominium unit for $107,000.

Medina seemed to share some of these experiences in a 41-page e-book titled "How I Saved Someone's Life and Marriage and Family Problems Thru Communication," which recounts the marriage of a man and a woman who divorced, then remarried ? and in between times had frightening encounters with aliens and ghosts.

"The author was with his wife in New York and his wife was attacked by a ghost," Medina wrote on a personal blog. "She was seeing a ghost and was being taunted and messed with. She informed her husband and he told her to go to sleep and he would watch over her. Minutes later he was attacked by a demon ghost and he was sick and throwing up."

A self-described fan of ghost hunting, Medina wrote on his Facebook page that he and Alfonso had once searched for ghouls in Florida and Louisiana. Other adventures included an encounter with bats in a cave in the Bahamas. A video he posted shows Medina throwing an object at the winged mammals before they fly toward him.

Acting was also a part of his life, according to Medina, who claimed to have appeared in the Miami-based crime drama "Burn Notice," though his name doesn't appear in online credits for the show.

His work life, according to his Facebook page, included a job as property management supervisor at The Gables Club, a gated, upscale condominium complex in Coral Gables. An official for the company who refused to identify himself said Friday that Medina worked there "briefly," but declined to elaborate on when or why he left the job.

A maintenance worker, who would not give his name, said he had seen Medina working at the front desk, taking care of calls and the tenants. He said was "a very nice guy, polite."

When he saw the news this morning and Medina's picture, the worker said, "It can't be. He's too nice."

Yoshi Dade, 33, a neighbor of Medina's at the townhouse complex where he lives in South Miami, said Medina approached him more than a year ago while Dade was working out. Dade said Medina told him he was the neighborhood watch patrol. He also told Dade he had a concealed weapons permit. Those claims could not be confirmed immediately.

Neighborhood watch became a household phrase following the arrest of former watch volunteer George Zimmerman, who was acquitted last month of all charges in the fatal shooting of Trayvon Martin in a gated townhouse complex in central Florida. Zimmerman shot Martin following a confrontation between the two while Zimmerman was on patrol.

Of Medina, Dade said, "He would walk around here and kinda patrol the area. He was always telling me there was a lot of stuff going on around here."

Dade thought the incident was bizarre and had only a few other interactions with Medina after that.

"He was just different," Dade said.

Neighbors said Medina was very private and never said hello.

Lori Wilkinson saw the couple and their daughter several times at the apartment's pool and mailbox and said they seemed like a nice family.

A neighbor who only identified herself as Sylvia said she was shocked.

"I couldn't sleep last night. I kept thinking of her," Sylvia said, although she said she did not know the couple.

Medina wrote several Facebook postings on Thursday about his wife, who was a waitress at Denny's.

"Im going to prison or death sentence for killing my wife love you guys, miss you guys takecare Facebook people you will see me in the news," said one post.

To Pamela Rutledge, the director of the Media Psychology Research Center in Boston, the grim postings were Medina's way of communicating his pain.

"This looked to me like someone who was in a lot of emotional distress who was actually confessing," she said. "Facebook and social technologies are really, for a lot of people, the go-to means of communication."

On July 25, a photo of a bloody body part showed up as the profile picture on the Facebook page of former Tampa, Fla., wrestler Brian McGhee. Hours later, he was charged with killing an ex-girlfriend.

According to Medina's arrest affidavit, he and Alfonso got into a heated argument in an upstairs bedroom of their condominium, at which point he grabbed a gun and pointed it at her. He said Alfonso left the bedroom, then later returned to tell him she was leaving him. Medina then went downstairs and confronted Alfonso in the kitchen, where she began punching him, the affidavit says.

Medina went back upstairs to get his gun. When he returned with it, Alfonso grabbed a knife. Medina said in the affidavit that he was able to wrestle the knife away and put it in a drawer, but that she began punching him again. It was then that he shot her several times, according to the affidavit.

A Facebook post about the slaying went out to friends at 11:11 a.m. Thursday.

Then came the photo, titled "Rip Jennifer Alfonso:" a woman in black leotards slumped on the floor who looked like she had fallen backward from a kneeling position, with her legs bent to her sides and blood on her left arm and left cheek. The photo was up for more than five hours before Facebook removed the page late Thursday afternoon.

If you want to take a stand against the NCAA's blatant hypocrisy on amateurism issues, I can pick a million better places to start than a hotel room in New Haven, Conn.

That's where an autograph broker says he paid Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel - the reigning Heisman Trophy winner - to sign hundreds of pieces of memorabilia, according to an ESPN report.

Manziel hasn't spoken to the media since the allegations were made public, so we don't know his intentions, but if the broker is to be believed, the electrifying quarterback wanted the money for new rims, not because he was protesting an unfair labor practice by the NCAA.

Still, legions of NCAA critics have seized on l'affaire Manziel to pummel the organization once again and call for reforms of all kinds to the way it does business - all while excusing Manziel because, hey, the NCAA sucks.

I?m not in that camp.

I think the NCAA?s rules can be terrible and believe that Manziel ? if he did what he is alleged to have done ? should be punished. Just because a rule is stupid doesn?t mean you have free rein to break it without consequence.

Some want to compare the NCAA rules to great moral injustices. Rules so morally wrong that not following them was the only way to change them and the system. I?ve seen Rosa Parks? name bandied about recent days. And the American colonists? refusal to pay British taxes. Let?s be clear: This is not even in the same stratosphere. And we should stop using those terms immediately.

If Manziel or any other college athlete wants to join the Ed O?Bannon lawsuit against the NCAA over the organization?s sale of athletes? likenesses, go for it. You?ll find lots of support from here and most other places.

If Manziel or any other college athlete wants to practice civil disobedience over jersey sales or autograph rules, do it in public. Accept the consequences. Take a stand. I?ll be cheering you on.

If they want to stage a protest or a walkout or organize a picket line ? this is, at its heart, a labor rights issue ? so be it.

None of that happened in a hotel room in New Haven, where ? if the broker?s videotape is to be believed ? Manziel said he would deny ever having done the autographing if it were made public. That?s not civil disobedience. That?s not taking a stand. It?s looking for a way around the rules.

Yes, the NCAA?s hypocrisy is mind-boggling.

The organization?s website ? despite claiming jersey numbers are not tied to certain individuals ? allowed searches by name until ESPN?s Jay Bilas exposed it this week. Search for Johnny Manziel and, lo and behold, up popped a No. 2 Texas A&M jersey for sale.

Players can sign autograph memorabilia that schools can then sell, yet the athletes cannot sell those autographs on their own. Schools can sell game-worn jerseys, but players cannot sell jerseys they own or awards they earned.

The Manziel allegations have shone a brighter light on these unfair NCAA practices. They ought to be changed in a meaningful way. Nobody looks good in this case. Not the NCAA.

Not the autograph broker, who allegedly offered Manziel money for his signatures, secretly videotaped the encounter, offered to sell the video to ESPN (which refused to pay), allowed the network to see the video, ratted out Manziel and says he won?t cooperate with the NCAA. And certainly not Manziel, who knows selling your autograph is against NCAA rules and doesn?t particularly need the additional cash. He has put his entire career ??and Texas A&M?s hopes for a successful season ? in jeopardy with his reckless actions.

Real change is coming to the NCAA, which can no longer defend the way it does business in the wake of new television deals that generate hundreds of millions of dollars and is facing pressure from the biggest money-making conferences to alter its governance structure.

And real change is needed.

Just stop trying to tell everyone it?s needed because a Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback might get punished for knowingly breaking the rules in the privacy of a hotel room for $7,500 in cash.

Facebook jumps $32B in 29 days to blast over 14-month old IPO price

On July 2, Facebook stock was under $25. Today, a week after Facebook reported strong earnings and massive mobile ad sales, the world?s preeminent social network is in the the $37-38 range, occasionally peeking over the symbolic $38 barrier it debuted at.

Congratulations, Facebook.

That?s an astounding jump of $32 billion in company valuation in just 29 days. And if you look at the dark days of September 2012, when the stock price hit a low of under $18, that?s a massive $48 billion explosion in just ten months.

In other words, Facebook has more than doubled in value in under a year.

Facebook?s initial IPO was riddled with controversy. The company didn?t make any money in mobile, and tried to obscure that damning fact. Eventually, Facebook added a disclaimer about mobile risk to its prospectus only days before the company went public. With that and other glitches, FB was nearly the worst IPO in a decade, and didn?t boost above its offer price ? a mark of pride for most companies that go public ? and failed to recover its initial price for 14 long months.

Shortly, however, that will all be behind Facebook.

There?s nothing like reporting record earnings, and there?s also nothing like absolutely killing it in mobile, recording 41 percent of your revenue in a category that you had zero revenue in just a short year ago.

But it?s Facebook?s future prospects that has Wall Street all hot and bothered:

?Soon, we?ll have more revenue on mobile than on desktop,? Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg told analysts.

That?s a big deal ? a really, really big deal. And not just for Facebook.

?Every single year we?ve heard people say ?This is the year of mobile,? Nanigans SVP Dan Slagen told me two days ago. ?But this is the first time we?ve seen someone come forward and put forward the kind of number that Facebook did.?

And it happened in a quarter that saw Google ? Facebook?s prime competition for online advertising dollars ? sink a little in mobile. Together, the two online ad giants account for 70 percent of global mobile ad revenues, with Google projected to pull in almost $9 billion on mobile in 2013, and the younger upstart Facebook pulling in just over $2 billion. But at its current rate of growth, that split could be much more even in just a few years.

Facebook has accomplished that by working hard to be accessible and useful for small business ? the company has over a million individual advertisers. And Facebook has accomplished it by building innovative and at times controversial ad products right in users? news feeds that have increased clickthrough rates for advertisers by an astounding 49 times over the network?s initial sidebar ads.

There?s got to be a lot of high-fiving at Facebook headquarters in Menlo Park today. Or at least the occasional smile of quiet satisfaction, as the company has proved what internally, most have already known: Facebook is on the right track.

Whooping cough booster not enough to stop outbreaks

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Giving adolescents and adults a booster shot of the whooping cough vaccine offers some protection against the infection - but not enough to prevent outbreaks, according to a new study.

"The take-home message is, we need a new vaccine," lead author Dr. Roger Baxter, co-director of the Vaccine Study Center at Kaiser Permanente in Oakland, California, told Reuters Health.

The booster, known as Tdap, protects against tetanus and diphtheria as well as whooping cough, also called pertussis. A similar combination vaccine is given to children in five doses between two months and six years of age.

The original vaccines contained whole pertussis bacteria and were highly effective in preventing whooping cough outbreaks, Baxter and his team noted in their report in the British medical journal BMJ.

But safety concerns led to the introduction of so-called acellular vaccines in the 1990s.

Studies have suggested the acellular vaccines are weaker than the earlier versions, which may help explain why pertussis outbreaks are becoming more common in the U.S.

As a result, the Tdap booster for adolescents and adults was introduced in 2005. The U.S. Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices now recommends use of the vaccine instead of the next scheduled tetanus diphtheria booster shot for everyone age 11 and older.

To investigate whether that move was effective in fighting outbreaks, Baxter and his colleagues looked at data from 2006 to 2011, during which time California saw the highest incidence of whooping cough in the last 50 years.

The researchers matched 668 people age 11 and older with confirmed whooping cough from Kaiser Permanente Northern California records to 10,098 others who tested negative for whooping cough and 21,599 similar people who didn't get sick.

Twenty-four percent of people with pertussis had been immunized with Tdap, versus 32 percent of negative-testers.

Once people's age, race, gender and vaccine history were taken into account, the researchers calculated that the booster shot was 53 to 64 percent effective at preventing whooping cough.

By comparison, a single dose of the current measles-mumps-rubella vaccine confers immunity to all three viruses in 95 percent of people who receive it, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The rate of pertussis infection was highest among 11- to 14-year-olds, who had only received acellular vaccines as children. This younger age group also saw a greater absolute benefit from Tdap vaccination compared to older individuals who had received at least some whole-cell vaccines early in life.

Immunity conferred by the acellular pertussis vaccines is known to fade more quickly than that offered by the original whole-cell formulation, Baxter noted.

While the Tdap booster had been introduced to address this issue, he added, the new findings show that giving it to adolescents and adults isn't going to solve the problem.

"It's going to blunt those epidemics a little bit, but it's not going to be like the old whole-cell pertussis vaccine that really took those outbreaks away. We expect that we will see these periodic outbreaks actually increase over the next few years as we reach a time that no one has had whole-cell vaccines," Baxter added.

"I think we knew at the time we moved to the acellular vaccine that we traded safety for efficacy," Dr. Paul Offit, director of the Vaccine Education Center at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, told Reuters Health.

"I don't think it's been until the last few years that we realized how big of a trade that was," said Offit, who was not involved in the new study.

He added that the findings are consistent with a number of other recent reports showing that immunity from the newer vaccine fades more quickly, and that it's just not that effective.

"This is the best tool available and it clearly and definitely decreases your risk of getting whooping cough, it's a no-brainer," he said.

"But we would do better with a better vaccine, there's room for a better vaccine."

A son of Los Angeles Dodgers manager Don Mattingly is going to play college basketball for Bob Knight's son.

Preston Mattingly has committed to Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas, where Pat Knight coaches the team.

Mattingly, who turns 26 next month, spent six seasons in baseball's minor leagues but never advanced past Class A.

He played basketball at Evansville (Ind.) Central High, where he averaged 21 points as a senior. His former coach there contacted Knight, who offered Mattingly a scholarship.

''I was really glad he's going to go back and get an education,'' the elder Mattingly said Tuesday. ''Trying to get by today, you need an education. He's going to get a chance to play while he's doing it.''
