That's why farmers are willing to spend about $75 per session for a chiropractic adjustment.

"The cows tolerate it incredibly well," said Gilbertson, the veterinarian. "They may be apprehensive at first, until they figure out how good it feels."

Meyer didn't have specific figures on how much milk Lucky gave following her chiropractic treatments, but because her mother was the most productive cow in the herd, he wanted to make sure Lucky was in good shape.

While chiropractic care is reserved for injured cows, dairy farmers also are investing in healthy cows' happiness.

Richard Conrad installed $70,000 waterbeds on his farm in Grafton, Ohio, about a year ago. It took the 220 dairy cows a few months to adjust to the softer surface but now they seem to enjoy it, he said.

"They were real skeptical at first because it was real jiggly," said Conrad, 53, "but once they adapted they didn't look back. They just jump on and stay there."

The result has been milk with fewer impurities and in greater volume ? cows that used to give about 80 pounds of milk per day now average about 90 pounds, Conrad said. However, he couldn't credit the waterbeds with all the improvement; he also upgraded ventilation in his barns and installed misting technology to keep the herd cool.

Dairy farmers commonly adjust air, temperature and lighting to keep cows happy. Some have also installed large rotating brushes that gently scratch the cows' backs and massage their faces and shoulders, said Marcia Endres, a University of Minnesota Extension dairy scientist.

And some dairy producers have employed even more unusual techniques, even in absence of scientific data that justifies their use. In Germany, for example, the Dortmund Concert Hall plays recordings of different classical pieces for specific cows. The hall then serves milk from the respective cows during live concerts featuring those same pieces.

"Which means you'll now be able to both listen to and taste the musical highlights," the hall says in one advertisement.

MADRID (AP) ? Conservative Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy insisted Monday that the country's banking sector would not need an international rescue as concern over the bailout of nationalized lender Bankia sent its stock price plummeting while Spain's borrowing costs soared.

"There will be no rescue of the Spanish banking sector," Rajoy told a press conference.

However, he added that the government had no choice but to bail out Bankia, which has been crippled by Spain's real estate slump.

"We took the bull by the horns because the alternative was collapse," said Rajoy, stressing that Bankia clients' savings were now safer than ever.

Bankia, Spain's fourth-largest bank, is estimated to have ?32 billion in toxic assets and was effectively nationalized earlier this month when the government converted ?4.5 billion in rescue funds it gave last June into shares.

The lender's shares fell 28 percent on opening in Madrid on Monday ? Bankia's first day back on the stock exchange following its announcement Friday that it would need the ?19 billion ($23.8 billion) in state aid to shore itself up against its bad loans, a far bigger bailout than expected. The shares, which recovered slightly in the afternoon, closed 13.4 percent lower at ?1.36.

Bank of Spain estimates show Spain's lenders are sitting on some ?180 billion ($233 billion) in assets that could cause them losses. The government fears the cost of rescuing the country's vulnerable banks could overwhelm its own finances, which are already strained by a double-dip recession and an unemployment rate of nearly 25 percent, and force it to seek a rescue by the rest of Europe.

Among the chief concerns surrounding Bankia's request for state aid ? the largest in Spanish history ? is just how Spain plans to fund it. The country's borrowing costs have risen sharply over the past few weeks.

On Monday, Spain's interest rate, or yield, for 10-year bonds on the secondary market ? a key indicator of market confidence ? rose 0.16 percentage points to close at 6.45 percent. Rajoy said this had more to do with broader concerns about Europe and Greece and dismissed suggestions it had anything to do with Bankia.

A rate of 7 percent is considered unsustainable over the long term and there is concern that Spain might soon be pushed join the ranks of Greece, Ireland and Portugal and seek an international bailout.

The Prime Minister said that the government had not yet decided how it would proceed in funding the Bankia bailout.

However, the Economy Ministry said earlier Monday that it is considering injecting government debt into Bankia's accounts. The bank could then turn to the European Central Bank and use those bonds as collateral to receive cash for the recapitalization.

Analysts said that such a technique would only prove to investors that the country is having difficulties raising money on the international debt markets and would therefore make them even more reluctant to buy Spanish debt.

"It sends a signal of a lack of confidence," said Mark Miller of Capital Economics in London.

Oscar Moreno of Madrid brokerage Renta4 said the government has little choice: either use this uncommon technique or simply ask the European Union for money to bail out the banking sector ? which Rajoy has vehemently ruled out as unnecessary.

Moreno said Bankia's share price drop ? and the rising bond yield ? showed investors the Spanish banking sector's woes are getting worse. Only last week, for instance, Economy Minister Luis de Guindos said the government would inject about ?9 billion into Bankia.

"Basically, what the investor sees is that, with what has emerged with Bankia, more money is going to be needed than what was originally stated" in two government decrees ordering banks to put aside a total of some ?80 billion in provisions to cushion against losses from real estate, Moreno added.

Spain's rocky financial situation has been made worse due to overspending by its semiautonomous regions. One of the regional governments, Catalonia, called for financial assistance last week, claiming it was running out of options to refinance its debts.

Asked about the fragile state of finances of some of Spain's regions, Rajoy said, "We are not going to let any region or financial entity fall because otherwise the country would fall."

Concern about the health of Europe's banks is a key constituent of the region's financial crisis. While Spanish banks suffer mainly from soured real estate investments, they and their counterparts across Europe also hold massive amounts of shaky government bonds. As the financial crisis worsens, those bonds lose value, hurting the banks.

The big fear is that if Greece eventually leaves the euro, confidence in other financially weak countries like Spain and Italy could fall, causing the value of their bonds to drop. Ultimately, the worry is that could undermine confidence in the system and create bank runs.

To avert such a disastrous scenario, financial experts are increasingly calling for a Europe-wide support system for the banks.

Up to 80% of Australian practitioners have counseled clients who have concerns about the impact of digital communications tools on their relationships.

This is one of the results from a survey conducted by Relationships Australia Victoria (RAV) in 2011.

The national survey sought to reveal more about the ways social media and technology are changing people?s relationships with each other. It involved separate surveys of Relationships Australia practitioners and members of the community.

Results from the practitioner survey revealed:

• 80% of respondents had counselled clients who raised concerns about the impact of Facebook on their relationships;

• 72% had encountered concerns about email; and

• 50% had encountered concerns about mobile internet devices, blogs and forums.

The responses indicated that internet pornography, cybersex and online dating and gambling sites continue to cause problems in relationships.

Other commonly cited issues included:

• partners resorting to the use of secret SIM cards and email addresses to maintain infidelities;

• online stalking, checking and monitoring of partners? emails and messages;

• hacking into ex-partners? Facebook accounts;

• use of the internet and technology to the exclusion of one?s partner; and

• intimacy problems arising from a partner accessing internet pornography.

Results from the community survey revealed:

• concern over children?s and teenagers? lack of social skills and neglect of family relationships due to internet use;

• a dichotomy between social media generating positive feelings of connection, and increasing feelings of loneliness and illusory, false or shallow connections;

• suspicion over partners? online activities and connections, including fears of online cheating; and

• concern over personally damaging or detrimental posts made by young people.

The impact of internet use on intimate partner relationships was also explored in an article published in Family Relationships Quarterly, the newsletter of the former Australian Family Relationships Clearinghouse (now part of Child Family Community Australia).

The article focused on internet affairs, and described a 2005 survey of over 1,500 mental health professionals that found that approximately one in five clients in mental health treatment were accessing help due to the damaging influence of internet sexual activities.

The article identified three factors that make internet affairs a growing issue:

• online relationships can develop more quickly due to lowered inhibitions, absent physical cues, and the ease of exchanging information;

• although infidelity is hardly new, the internet creates an environment where access to potential partners is unlimited and unconstrained by time; and

• many people think that internet flirtation and affairs are less deceptive as they do not involve physical contact.

The results of these studies make an important contribution to the planning of services specifically designed to help people navigate our increasingly connected world.
