Ramping Up Your Laptop's RAM

One of the simplest ways to improve performance on a laptop is to add more RAM, or random access memory. RAM prices have been steadily dropping over the years, and it's now possible to see a significant performance boost with an investment of twenty or thirty dollars. If your machine is sluggish, you might need additional memory. Even if your machine is new, a memory upgrade is worth investigating.

Jason Trawick: Officially in Control of Britney Spears!

Britney Spears' fiance Jason Trawick is officially her newest conservator, meaning he has the legal power to govern the pop star's financial, legal and medical affairs.

Britney's dad and conservator Jamie Spears filed the petition earlier this month, asking the court to add Jason as co-conservator. A judge agreed to the request.

Spears also wanted Jason, her former agent, on board as co-conservator.

After the hearing, Jamie was "thrilled," and the move makes total sense, since the two are set to be married. Spears and Trawick got engaged in December.

As co-conservator, Jason Trawick is now empowered to help decide how she will earn and spend her money, including the $15 million deal with The X Factor.

The reason for the conservatorship is that after her meltdowns of 2007-2008, a judge determined she lacked the capacity to make these decisions herself.

By setting up the conservatorship, the judge protected B from some of the leeches that surrounded her and put the power in Jamie's hands, and now Jason's.

Ridiculous as it all seems now, Spears could file papers to end the conservatorship altogether, but she has not done so. So it can't be all bad for her.

Is Believe The Place For Justin Bieber's Baby Mama Drama?

Pop star said he wrote about his 2011 paternity controversy on the upcoming album.
By John Mitchell

<P>Sometimes you just have some things to get off your chest. </P><P> </P><P>For teen pop phenom <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/bieber_justin/artist.jhtml">Justin Bieber</a>, one of those things is a <a href="/news/articles/1673599/justin-bieber-baby-claim.jhtml">paternity suit</a> filed last year by a 20-year-old California woman claiming that a brief bathroom rendezvous with him following an October 2010 concert resulted in her pregnancy. </P><P> </P><P>Rather than ignore the matter, Bieber is <a href="/news/articles/1683817/justin-bieber-believe-paternity-scandal-song.jhtml">confronting it head on</a> with his new album <i>Believe.</i> "That girl &#8212; Mariah Yeater &#8212; who said she was going to have my baby. I wrote about that situation," Bieber told the BBC of his new album. "Every song has a piece of me... I wrote almost all of them or co-wrote them." </P><P> </P><P><center><embed src="http://media.mtvnservices.com/mgid:uma:video:mtv.com:757407/cp~id%3D1682760%26vid%3D757407%26uri%3Dmgid%3Auma%3Avideo%3Amtv.com%3A757407" width="460" height="260" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowFullScreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" base="."></embed></center> </P><P> </P><P>The case, which Yeater dropped in November, has many wondering if Bieber was wise to commit his feelings to something as public and eternal as an album, or if he should have just let go of what was really a minor controversy. </P><P> </P><P>Though few believed them, the rumors introduced Bieber to one of the many pitfalls of celebrity and briefly overwhelmed his press cycle when he was trying to promote his Christmas album, <i>Under the Mistletoe.</i> The accusation challenged his family-friendly brand, something <a href="http://newsroom.mtv.com/2011/11/10/justin-bieber-legal-expert-weighs-in-on-paternity-case/">family law expert told MTV News</a> could be grounds for a defamation of character suit. </P><P> </P><P>The suit likely weighed heavily on Bieber, regardless of its merit, making it prime material for his songwriting. But does dragging it all back into the public sphere benefit him in any tangible way? His <a href="/news/articles/1683621/justin-bieber-paternity-accuser-message.jhtml">recent tweet about Yeater</a> &#8212; which read, "Dear mariah yeeter...we have never met...so from the heart i just wanted to say..." accompanied by an audio clip of Sasha Baron Cohen's character Borat saying, "You will never get this" &#8212; was neither subtle nor particularly sophisticated. And since details of the suit were made so public and remain fresh in the minds of his fans, why restart the conversation if there is nothing new to add? </P><P> </P><P>Responding to your own press is a slippery slope for celebrities, and it can do one of two things: clear the air or consume the conversation. </P><P>For Madonna and Michael Jackson, it did the former. "Billie Jean," Michael Jackson's classic declaration that he was not the father, was wrapped in a bit of mystery. There have long been contradictory claims that the song is about groupies MJ encountered early in his fame and that it was derived from a real-life experience in which a mentally ill fan claimed that Jackson had fathered her child. But it really doesn't matter; we just know that these accusations were out there, so MJ decided to shut it down with a song. </P><P> </P><P>The difference is, Bieber's controversy is already over and, considering few people ever believed the claims, was never a huge deal to begin with. </P><P> </P><P>Ever an expert at handling the press, Madonna held her head high when she addressed the massive backlash she encountered after she pressed through her sexually charged <i>Erotica</i>-era with a lone song, "Human Nature." She posited that people's anger with her had more to do with their own hang-ups than with her behavior and refused to apologize. Madonna knew she'd struck a nerve and defiantly declared, "Absolutely no regrets." </P><P> </P><P>She dually stood her ground and introduced something new to the conversation. With "Human Nature," Madonna held up a mirror to the public and asked "Is it really my sexuality you are uncomfortable with?" </P><P>Bieber needs to pay particular attention to this lest he fall hard into Taylor Swift territory, where the artist is practically expected to directly address the minutia of their private lives in every song. </P><P> </P><P>First, it was <a href="/news/articles/1599032/taylor-swift-explains-why-she-was-open-about-joe-jonas-breakup.jhtml">Joe Jonas with "Forever &amp; Always,"</a> then John Mayer on "Dear John" and <a href="/news/articles/1650042/taylor-swift-needed-to-perform-innocent-at-vmas.jhtml">Kanye West on "Innocent."</a> It's important, of course, for a singer/ songwriter to write what they know, but there's a reason we only just learned <a href="http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/entertainment/2012/02/the-man-who-inspired-adeles-rolling-in-the-deep-revealed/" target="_blank">who the subject</a> of Adele's multiplatinum, Grammy-winning <i>21</i> was (and why she's never confirmed it). </P><P> </P><P>We want to be able to apply a song's emotion to our own lives, but it's hard to do that when a track is either too specific or too self-indulgent. We haven't heard Bieber's song about Yeater, so we can't speak to whether it is either. If he has something new to say about the controversy &#8212; perhaps how it felt to be betrayed by one of his fans &#8212; then he may have found a way to turn lemons into lemonade. </P><P> </P><P>But if all he brings to the table are boasts about not being the father, well, then he should get ready for questions about how literal his love songs are regarding his relationship with Selena Gomez. Once you open the door and make your private life the subject of your professional endeavors, there's no turning back.</p>

Samsung Galaxy Note for T-Mobile spotted in the wild, pretends it's no big deal

Oh, snap. By all appearances, the T-Mobile folks haven't lost sight of the popularity of the Galaxy Note, as a collection of snapshots obtained by TmoNews have revealed Samsung's phablet in none other than Magenta colors. At the very least, this suggests the Bellevue crew is considering bringing the 5.3-inch handset to its stores, and while the carrier's subscribers are currently able to use AT&T's Galaxy Note LTE on the Magenta network, it's a rather roundabout process and the results are less than ideal. We can only hope this one pans out, because really, who wouldn't love to take this monster for a proper ride on the little network that could?

Noah Wyle Speaks on "Surreal" Arrest

Noah Wyle has spoken out on his arrest.

The Falling Skies star was handcuffed and taken into custody on Monday after joining a group of about 100 ADAPT members who were protesting in D.C., urging Congress to not cut any Medicaid benefits.

"I think they're really proud of the old man right now," Wyle told the Associated Press, referring to his estranged wife and two children, while waiting to be processed.

Adding that the experience was "slightly surreal," Wyle joked about how both he and former ER co-star George Clooney have now been arrested in the last month.

I'll "let George focus on the international; I'll deal with the small domestic issues," Wyle said.

Clooney has been active over the past year or so in expressing the need to rescue Sudanese citizens from an oppressive regime.

Study finds way more emperor penguins than previously thought

New satellite data reveals that emperor penguins are far more abundant in Antarctica than previously estimated.?

Emperor penguins in Antarctica are far more plentiful than previously thought, a study that used extremely high-resolution imagery snapped by satellites has revealed.

"It surprised us that we approximately doubled the population estimate," said Peter Fretwell, a scientist with the British Antarctic Survey and lead author of a paper published today in the journal PLoS One.

Fretwell said that in contrast to previous estimates, which put?emperor penguin?numbers somewhere between 270,000 and 350,000 birds, the new research counted 595,000 birds.

Antarctic research is challenging, since humans can essentially only work on the frigid continent for three months out of the year, and nailing down hard numbers for the iconic birds has proved difficult.

Bird census

The last overall population estimate, done in 1992, found that approximately 135,000 to 175,000 emperor penguins lived around the continent.?[See Antarctica's iconic emperor penguins in action.]

Fretwell and a team of researchers melded several kinds of high-definition imagery captured by satellites to arrive at their new number. They sharpened the images to allow them to differentiate between penguins, shadows on the ground, and the penguins' poop, which is plentiful enough to show up in satellite pictures.

The team also used actual ground counts of penguins in their analysis. "The ground counts told us the density of penguin clusters, and we used this to multiply the area of penguins calculated by our satellite image analysis into penguin numbers," Fretwell told OurAmazingPlanet in an email.

The analysis not only doubled the previous estimate of emperor penguins, but also uncovered seven previously undiscovered colonies.

Fretwell said this kind of research is important, particularly in the face of a changing climate.

Penguin future

There are concerns that changes to Antarctica's ice heralds a difficult future for emperor penguins. The birds breed on the Antarctic sea ice during the brutal winter months, but earlier spring melts may pose threats to the more northern colonies, according to a statement from the British Antarctic Survey.

Intel Core i7-3770K CPU review roundup: crossing the Ivy Bridge

Ivy Bridge

Today is officially Ivy Bridge day, in case you didn't already know. Intel took the wraps off the latest member of its processor family and the internet wasted no time putting the flagship Core i7-3770K through its paces. The 3.5GHz quad-core desktop chip comes packing not only some architectural tweaks, but a brand new integrated GPU in the form of the HD 4000. Oh, and it does all this using a brand new 22nm manufacturing process and 3D "Tri-Gate" transistors. What does that mean for you, the user? Lower power consumption, better performance and, surprisingly, unbelievably fast media transcoding. When AnandTech turned its eyes towards Quick Sync, the on-die media transcode engine introduced with Sandy Bridge, the 3770K practically buried the competition. Using Cyberlink Media Espresso the new chip turned a DRM-stripped Blu-ray of Harry Potter (130 minutes of 1080p video) into an iPad friendly format in just seven minutes without taxing the CPU.

At idle, power consumption hasn't changed much, but when TechSpot put the pedal to the metal things looked quite a bit different. The new i7-3770K sucked down just 147 watts, which was even four watts less than lower clocked i5-2500K. And, of course, it delivered much better performance. In fact, in Bit-Tech's tests, the only chip that was able to routinely best it was the hexa-core 3960X Extreme Edition -- and even that CPU barely eked out its victories. While AMD's offerings simply can't compete with Intel's on pure performance or power consumption, it does still outrun run Chipzilla's GPU. The HD 4000 is, undeniably, a huge step forward for the Core line, but it falls just short of matching the A8's integrated Radeon on Tech Report's tests. Samsung countdown teases next Galaxy phone with anagram

Samsung Galaxy countdown teases you with anagrams

Sammy's latest marketing ploy kicked off with a string of nonsense that could just as easily have come from the Sunday morning jumble: "Destination: tgeltaayehxnx," declared the Samsung Mobile Twitter account. Anagram wizards will read that as, "the next Galaxy," and wouldn't you know it, it's also the URL for an auspicious countdown clock. Sammy promises to let visitors take "the next step" in about 17 hours and counting. Bonafide internet sleuths can find an extra carrot strung up in the site's source, reading, "discover how Samsung is about to challenge the way you view the Galaxy once more." Is Samsung about to break its own May 3rd unveiling? We'll let you know in 16 hours and change.

Update: It seems like that ticker just might be counting down to some sort of anagram guessing game, according to an Engadget tipster who partook in some directory diving. Among a series of assets of different colored lettered tiles he found images with instructions warnings, reading "Click on the letters in the correct order to reveal your real destination," and "Following technology blindly often gets you nowhere." Ominous.

Update 2: And there it is. Samsung's revealed two (well, one and a half) teaser videos -- but they don't reveal much.

[Thanks, Naor]
